From Lowering Stress Naturally
In the past couple of decades, nursing homes have become populated with something other than the aging. They have become populated with aquariums, songbirds, cats, and dogs. Having visited these places with regularity, I've noted that these animals generally bring a new quality of living to those who have made the facility their home.
When my nearest sibling left home, my parents bought me a German Shepherd. Zeke and I became best of friends. When I was lonely, Zeke would give me his attention. If he was frightened by a thunderstorm, I would literally hold him in my lap on the porch swing. What I didn't think of until recently was that when I was feeling stressed out by school, bullies, or life in general, Zeke's presence in my life brought a sense of calm.
If you are willing to take on the responsibility of caring for a pet, he or she can be an excellent friend in stressful times.
